Woke up this morning and ended up going back to the Louvre. It was so great. We walked around to all the places we wanted to hit up and it was awesome.
A few of the highlights were definitely the Rubens room and the Vermeer. The Rubens room was INCREDIBLE. I nearly lost my breath walking in it was so impressive. The paintings were so massive, and the texture and everything. I don’t even know what to say. It was awesome. And seeing the Vermeer later, it was so tiny, but so peaceful and soft. It is incredible to see such extremes with these two, and have such impact with both.
We went back to the hostel after a few hours, and the got lunch. After that we went to the opera house, and ran into Rachael and some others on the tube on the way, who had just gone to the palace of Versailles. I really wanted to go as well, however plan on going when Becca comes to visit, so I didn’t feel too bad about staying here- plus I really wanted to go back to the Louvre. We grabbed Rachael and went to the Opera House and didn’t end up going too far in because we would have had to pay and the auditorium was closed. We saw a bit of the interior, which was still impressive, and the exterior was awesome as well.
We ran into Darlene there, and she told us about the Catacombs involving the French plague, which Rachael really wanted to go to, so we quick got on the tube and tried to get there in time. However, when we got there, we couldn’t find the actual catacombs building to get underground and see everything, and by the time we did actually find it, we were late by about 10 minutes and missed it. We were sad, so Shawn and I got a crepe and we all took the subway back.
We split up and Shawn headed back, while Cody, Rachael, and myself all went shopping. C&A is a big chain that I have noticed around Europe in general, and it was fairly inexpensive, so we went in and got a few nice things. I was excited about my new green argyle sweater. Awesome. I decided to go back to the room and pack my things so I didn’t have to worry about it later that night or the next morning, and Cody and Rachael decided to keep shopping for a while.
Later, we went up to Sacre Coeur, a really pretty chapel at the top of a hill where there was supposed to be a great view of the city. We got there and there was this hippie-fest basically going on. It was basically a huge group of young people all crowded around and singing, playing guitar, and being really bad at it. It was fairly entertaining though. We got a great view on the hill and the city was absolutely beautiful. What a great way to end a trip to Paris...
