GoRiLLaS RuNnInG ThRoUgH LoNdOn?!? nO WaY!!!

Saturday, September 27th

Started off the morning having breakfast with Luke and Shawn. I’m pretty excited because I think that Luke is going to be able to hook me up with tickets to the Opera later on since that is where his internship is. Also, I love the food staff people here. There is this one man who is sooo nice and friendly, and I always enjoy talking to him whenever I go get something to eat. There should be more people like this in the world!

By 9:00, Shawn and I got on the tube to catch the Great Gorilla Run, over by Tower Bridge, that would be starting at 10:30. Originally, he was going to run in it, but after finding out that you have to fundraise a bunch of money to run in it, he decided otherwise. I thought the idea of a bunch of gorillas running through London was absolutely hilarious, so I decided I had to check this out as well.

We explored a bit and found tons of people in gorilla suits in all kinds of themes. Among the ones we came across were pirates, jedi, many gorillas in women’s lingerie, and even gorilla village people. We got some fun pictures, and lined up at the starting line and watched as 700 gorillas took off to run through London. The announcer said that there were more people running in the race than there actually are gorillas in the wild. Wow.

After they all took off, we walked over by the drumline which was playing a great selection of cadences. They, of course, were all dressed in gorilla attire as well. It was a great addition to the race. The entire atmosphere was so unique. Everyone was having a great time, the music was awesome, and it was just such a high energy atmosphere.

Shawn and I walked around town following a few of the big stops along the race, and eventually came back to the finish line. We watched as 700 gorillas crossed the line, and then stayed and watched the percussionists a bit longer, with a few gorillas and a giant banana dancing to the music.

We then decided to go and check out the Tower of London since we were so close. We sat down for a lunch of fish and chips and fanta, and then went to explore the castle. Our Beefeater (aka Yeoman Warder) tour guide was a funny guy, and was very proud of the fact that he was the keeper of the ravens. I guess it is quite a big deal. We also learned that no one really knows where the term “Beefeater” came from, otherwise I would enlighten you with those facts as well. After the tour, we explored the rest of the castle and got to see some of the torture chambers, where the prisoners were kept and some of the delicate inscriptions they carved into the walls. The crown jewels were also an interesting exhibit, however not quite all that I had hoped it would be. I also got to see Traitor’s Gate, Bloody Tower, and several other places within the castle. Over all, it took us about 4 hours or so to look through the majority of the grounds.

ATTN: especially OEC Graphics people: One thing I found throughout Britain is their method of large scale advertising. Even as far back as Germany, there is so much construction and renovation everywhere. What they do, is create a huge wall that completely covers the renovation area, with a large scale graphic that is supposed to be what the final project will look like. On top of that is covered with advertisements from sponsors or other messages they wish to convey. Maybe it is because I work at a display graphics that I notice all of this so much more, but I found it interesting, and thought it was a really good idea, especially in such metropolitan areas. It really caught my eye since it related so well with the marketing ideas and sell sheets that I was working on for construction banners this summer.

We took the tube back and I met up with Cody for dinner. I got to pull a good joke today. Haven’t had any silly jenny jokes in a while, and to show you my absolutely amazing cheesy humor, I am dedicating this paragraph to that. At dinner, Chad and I were talking, and he asked something like “Do you know the history of fanta? Where it originated?” I responded, “No, but I WANTA!” …Thank you, thank you… I don’t remember the answer- something with being used in the military or something. I’ll google it later…

We decided we would all go out to the Sports Café club later that night because it had a really fun themed night that we wanted to check out. They had it set up where it was supposed to have inflatable twister, giant connect four, giant jenga, sumo suits, and a few other ridiculous attractions. However, when we got there, they were closing it down because people kept crashing drinks and it was getting too roudy… Sad… The cover charge wasn’t too bad, and we got a drink and hung around to dance for a bit, but it turned out to be pretty lame, so we just went back to the ISH bar for the night.

Here it was pretty crazy. We got a few drinks and it ended up being a giant dance party. So much fun. They played the most ridiculous music, including Hanson, Brittney Spears, and Who Let the Dogs Out. All the chees-licious good songs from middle school. There was a wide variety of music, but that is what caught my interest the most. Haha.

There is another video that I will post later that is absolutely amazing, but enjoy this slice for now...
